Buying Guide

BBQ Rangehoods come in a wide range of models and shapes to suit all household designs. They have an extremely large airflow due to the amount of smoke and heat coming from the large gas burners. A domestic kitchen rangehood should not be used as a BBQ Rangehood as they do not have the power to exhaust smoke or handle the extra heat put off by the BBQ.

A rangehood is an exhaust system that lives above the cooking area and captures the grease, steam, smoke, heat and odours above your stove. This is done by an internal fan that pulls air up into a special filter. If you would like cleaner air, healthier living space and a grease free environment then a BBQ rangehood is a necessity for your household.

This buying guide will help you find the perfect BBQ rangehood to suite your cooking and kitchen requirements.

Size

Most BBQ rangehoods are 650mm to 800mm in depth. They are designed to cover your cooking area and will have large air movements. It’s advised that the Rangehood extends at least 150mm wider than the cooking surface, to ensure maximum effectiveness.

If your BBQ has a cooking hood, it will push the overall depth of your BBQ an extra 200mm in overall depth and a normal rangehood will not cover your cooking area.

BBQ Rangehoods should be installed no less than 1 metre above your cooking surface. This is due to flare ups caused by oils and fats dripping down over the exposed gas fire.

Features

When searching for your perfect BBQ rangehood, features are one of the most important aspects to investigate.

BBQ Rangehoods should be ducted where possible as this moves all smoke and smell to the outside. Most BBQ rangehoods will require optional ducting; this is not supplied with your rangehood. Most BBQ rangehoods will require 200mm piping.

All rangehoods have filters. These need to be cleaned out regularly. Make sure the filter can be easily removed from the rangehood.

Nobody wants to cook with little light. That's why most rangehoods come with built in lights to help brighten up your cooking area. The lighting is usually either halogen, fluorescent or incandescent in rangehoods. Generally two globes will better illuminate over the cooking area.

Noise is a feature in rangehoods that vary from model to model. If noise is a major concern for you, look for a rangehood that informs you on the measured decibels. BBQ Rangehoods are generally made with a lot insulation to reduce the overall noise due to high volume of air being moved whilst in use. Air movements of 2000 cubic meters per hour and higher are available.
